ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Handicrafts was established with the aim of preserving traditional arts, enhancing technical knowledge, and promoting creative production. The primary objective of the department is to train students to specialize in various fields of handicrafts—such as ceramics, weaving, carpet-making, woodcraft, and glass polishing—while equipping them with modern approaches and sustainable production skills to help protect cultural heritage.
The Carpet and Kilim Weaving Program operates within the department.
Graduates of the department may transfer to undergraduate programs through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS), including:
• Departments of Traditional Turkish Arts within Faculties of Fine Arts • Textile Design and Fashion Design programs within Faculties of Art and Design
PROGRAM
Carpet and Kilim Weaving Program
Within the program:
• Students receive theoretical courses in areas such as the history of Turkish carpet and kilim art, pattern knowledge, textile materials, and dyeing technology. • Practical training is provided in pattern drawing, natural dyeing, and weaving techniques.
Students gain sectoral experience through a mandatory 30-day internship program, allowing them to directly observe and participate in carpet and kilim production processes in workshop and factory environments.

• Technical proficiency in carpet-kilim pattern design, weaving techniques, and natural dyeing • Entrepreneurship skills and competence in managing production processes • Ability to develop innovative and sustainable projects in the field of handicrafts
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the program earn the title “Carpet–Kilim Technician” and may work in:
• Public institutions (Public Education Centers, municipalities, cultural centers) • Private sector workshops and factories • Art and design projects
They may also work as pattern designers, quality control specialists, and master instructors, or establish their own workshops and operate as independent entrepreneurs.
